Rainbow six siege zombie mode

It's my firm belief that more content was planned after the Article 5 mission, but was dropped because one or more executives believed 'this game isn't going to last, why waste resources on a story no one will care about for a game that's going to die soon?'. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Siege was projected as having a 12-18 month life span. This is pure speculation, but I believe Ubisoft never expected siege to be as big as it is. If Operation Chimera is a bit of a flop, then they can just write it off as a one-time event and be done with the concept, but if Operation Chimera is a success, it can be used as a base on which to 'reactivate' Siege's story with new co-op missions (people seem to forget that Siege is technically about Team Rainbow fighting the White Mask terrorist group). My assumption is it's possibly a low-stakes way of testing the waters for more co-op focused content in a similar vein to Article 5.

Why put a new mode in and then remove it, what's the purpose or point ? So the zombie mode is supposed to come next season and is going to last for 1 month (?)
